Empty post

Posted by: | Comments (1)

For today just a Blender word of wisdom: if everything else fails, try using an “empty”!

empty

You can make a camera target from it, adjust mapping coordinates, mirror and array and probably everything else that has eluded you in Blender 🙂

Happy blending!

Blendermama goes 2.5

Posted by: | Comments (0)

There has been a considerable posting gap on Blendermama. There were several reasons for the temporary blackout, for one my computer died on me and now I have a new and nicer one – I mean it works better only it has some terrible blue lights that make the space under my desk look like some crazy disco. Then me and my family are looking for a new place to live and it’s taking its toll on our energy and time. And my daughter is one year and a half and runs around a lot more.

But what upset Blendermama most was my unwillingness to go on with Blender 2.49 with the new shiny one “almost usable” at hand – I just couldn’t decide what to do next. If I had to really work – like for real life projects – I think I would have stuck with the old version until the 2.5 beta is out. But it looks as if I will be in mom-at-home land for some months still so I finally decided to make the switch. After much consideration and trying to figure out technical pros and cons I decided that…well, 2.5 SEEMS to work and, really, it looks so cool!!! 😛

I apologize to those who still work with the old and stable version that I won’t be posting anymore on 2.49 and I still think that new users should be cautious when choosing Blender 2.5 alpha if they need it for real work. All my old posts and tutorials will remain on the blog and I hope that for a while they will continue to be of some help.

So I’m back not really to zero but feel like I took some steps back as I am poking at the glossy but less familiar interface…

And guess what bugged me on my very first encounter with 2.5? the same problem I had with the old Blender, that is the “pan/rotate view” setting for the MMB! So this will be my first topic on the new Blendermama 2.5 series.

Imperial units in Blender 2.5

Posted by: | Comments (1)

I had a discussion going on a previous post about the lack of imperial units input in Blender 2.49. Thanks to Roofoo for bringing up the point and Toweyed for suggesting a workaround.

I’m sorry to say I had no idea and it took me a whole week to discover this has been addressed in Blender 2.5 and you will be able to enter feet inches and the small bothersome fractions as soon as the new Blender is out!

The Third & The Seventh by Alex Roman

Posted by: | Comments (4)

I watched the astounding short animated film by Alex Roman featured in the Blender news yesterday and really it is so inspiring… so first let me say wow wow wow!

But I wouldn’t have written here about it, thinking it’s not exactly Blender related, if a friend (yes, max user) didn’t tell me “hey, you should give up that Blender, look what people are doing today in Max”

Well!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have presented in a previous post the Blender interface. Now it’s time to do some Blender stuff. This is intended as a Blender beginner post so I will try to keep it simple yet cover several useful tools. I’ll remind you the online official user manual is also a good place to find basic information.

I will use a small simple object to demonstrate and as my primary interest is architectural modelling… how about a little house? 🙂

Little House

This is a post about modelling so right now we’ll settle for this dull grey (some architects might say sophisticated) render. We are not modelling something too fancy, it’s just a pretext to pass through some basic notions.
